Whole-house quotes: the guide to read before a dealer visits

Culligan, Kinetico and EcoWater don't publish prices - their systems are sized and sold in your home, installed by local dealers. That model bundles real value (sizing, plumbing, service), and it also means the number you hear depends on how prepared you are. This page is the preparation.

The rental question

Renting removes the upfront cost and the maintenance worry - and at $50/month it quietly passes a purchased system's total cost in year three or four, while building no equity in the equipment. Rent if you may move soon; buy if you're staying. Any quote should show you both totals over 10 years. Ask for that math in writing.

Ten questions that keep a quote honest

  • What did my water test show - and can I see the lab report, not just the demo?
  • Which contaminants, exactly, is this system certified to reduce - and by which certifier? (Compare with our decoder.)
  • What is the rated flow in GPM, and what happens to pressure at two showers plus a washing machine?
  • Equipment, installation, permits and haul-away - each line, separately.
  • What does year 2 cost? Year 5? Media, salt, filters, service calls.
  • Is the warranty parts, labour, or both - and who honours it if the dealer closes?
  • Renting vs buying over 10 years, in dollars, on one page.
  • What does it not treat? (A softener is not a filter; a carbon tank won't remove hardness.)
  • Can I think about it overnight with the written quote in hand?
  • Who services it, how fast, and at what call-out fee?

Red flags

  • 'Today only' pricing, or a discount that expires when the rep leaves.
  • Demonstration tricks (precipitation 'tests' that make any water look dirty) presented as lab results.
  • Certification language you can't find in NSF, IAPMO or WQA listings.
  • A single giant system proposed before anyone tested your water.
